The latest iteration of the Apple OS X operating system has been released, version 10.7, named Lion. The previous 7 (yes, I counted right), versions 10.0-10.6, were called Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard. Do I have suggestions for future ones?
Well, there is one “big cat” that hasn’t been used yet, and it’s an intriguing one because it’s the Clouded Leopard…the connection to “cloud computing” would seem irresistible, yet “clouded” is not a particularly positive sounding word, is it? Clouded as in splotchy or marbled? Clouded as in murky, unclear, unsure? Not likely to pass muster with the psycho-marketing boys.
Some, like Mountain Lion, Cougar, Catamount, and Bengal, have a “been there, done that” feel to them. Others, like Lynx, Bobcat, Ocelot, Margay, Serval, and Caracal seem a step backwards from the mighty King of Beasts. Personally, I think Pussycat would be funky, but probably too whimsical for Silicon Valley.
No, it would have to be something a bit non-specific…metaphorical if you will…because let’s face it, in real life, no cat except perhaps the already-used Tiger trumps the Lion. Hybrids like Liger and Tigon perhaps have an outside chance…trouble is, few people have heard of them.
But when push comes to shove, I think the next choice is pretty obvious, and indeed in
some sense it’s the required “step up” from Lion…and that’s Sabretooth! Beyond that, I don’t know what…Wildcat or Bearcat maybe…probably not Hellcat, altho hoo nose? What was the name of He-Man’s — oh, right…
a pride of lions, a leap of leopards, a shnog of shameless plugs…
